Britain's loneliest dog has finally found a new home after six years in a rescue centre - thanks to two caring Mirror readers.

Dalmatian-cross Dotty, aged seven, had spent most of her life in the kennels despite being viewed 10,000 times by visitors.

But now Mirror readers Ed and Janice Darrall, 62 and 59, have welcomed Dotty into their home in Telford, Shropshire.

The Daily Mirror reported on Dotty's struggle on Tuesday December 8 and, just two weeks later, she's found a home in time for Christmas.Janice said: "Dotty's absolutely gorgeous.

"As soon as we saw the article in The Daily Mirror, we knew she was going to be the dog for us – I picked up the phone with the paper still in front of me.

"She's such a beautiful dog, we took to her instantly. Neither of us can believe she's been there so long.

"We took her out for a walk and seemed to bond instantly, now we're just really excited to have her at home and spoil her for Christmas.

"We've already bought her loads of presents so she's got plenty toys, blankets and beds for Christmas Day.Dotty moved in with Ed, a self-employed mechanic, and Janice, a receptionist, on Saturday.

Janice said: "We wanted to rescue an older dog.

"When we saw Dotty she was absolutely perfect – we're so excited to have her here at home with us.

"We want her to trust us and love us, she's had a tough start but hopefully now she can get the love she deserves."

Desperate staff at Hilbrae Rescue Kennels couldn't believe Dotty's bad luck.

Marty Burrell, the 69-year-old who runs the centre, said: "We've no idea why no-one took Dotty in.

"She's adorable, a real charmer, and we all love her to bits.

"We'll be sad to see her go but it's wonderful to say goodbye knowing she'll be going to a loving, caring family home."

"I understand why this might put some people off, particularly if they work long hours but she's very calm.
