A vicious street fight broke out between gangs armed with a hammer, a chain and a dog near a homeless shelter in Manchester.

Shocking footage shows a brawl between around 10 people spill out of a university campus near ‘The Ark’ and onto Oxford Road beneath Mancunian Way.

Two of the offenders were armed with a hammer and a chain, witnesses said.

A dog on a lead can also be seen lunging and snarling at some of the men and women.The punch up happened at around 5.30pm on Tuesday, the Manchester Evening News reported .

A man was arrested around half an hour later for being in possession of an offensive weapon.

It is not clear whether those involved in the scrap belonged to the homeless camp.One onlooker, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “One offender had a hammer, other one chains and there was one also carrying a dog.

“The fight started and police came short afterwards and everyone involved just left.”A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed that one man had later been arrested: “At 5.55pm, we were called to reports of a group of eight people fighting with a hammer and a chain.

“A male was arrested for being in possession of an offensive weapon.”The Ark was set up as a homeless refuge on September 9 following months of anti-austerity protests around the city.

Scuffles unfolded as university security guards attempted to evict rough sleepers from the camp on September 18, which is on Manchester Metropolitan University land.

Bailiffs began dismantling The Ark and erected the fence after the university enforced a possession order granted by a judge in court the previous week.Members of the camp complained they had been given no warning that they were to be turfed off the land. However a university spokesman said they had no obligation to tell the camp when the possession order would be enforced.

Five rough sleepers accepted an offer of temporary accommodation from the council’s homeless team, who were present during the eviction.
