A civilian passenger plane carrying 224 people has crashed in Egypt.


The airliner took off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik this morning, and was heading for Russia, according to aviation sources.

It's believed the plane was mainly carrying Russian tourists.With the sad news that there appear to be no survivors, here is everything we know so far.

Workers on the scene had reported hearing voices from part of the wreckage but this appears to have been false hope.

Authorities say all 224 people on board - including 214 Russians and three Ukrainians - were all killed. All of Russia’s premier league matches will begin today with a minutes silence, Airlive has reported.

Russia is also sending rescue planes to the crash scene.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said he is “deeply shaken” by the crash.Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared November 1 a national day of mourning.

It comes following the crash of a Russian airliner in Egypt, the Kremlin press service said on today.

He said: “I now see a tragic scene. A lot of dead on the ground and many who died whilst strapped to their seats.

“The plane split into two, a small part on the tail end that burned and a larger part that crashed into a rock.

“We have extracted at least 100 bodies and the rest are still inside.”Russia’s top Investigative Committee has launched a case against airline Kogalymavia under an article regulating “violation of rules of flights and

But it is too soon to determine the cause of the tragic crash, Egypt’s civil aviation minister has said.

More on this as we get it.The Israeli military has offered its help to Egypt and Russia after a Russian airliner carrying 224 passengers and crew crashed in the Sinai peninsula.
“Since this morning the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) assisted with aerial surveillance in the efforts to locate the Russian airplane that lost contact over the Sinai Peninsula.

“The IDF has offered continued assistance to both Russia and Egypt if required,” a military statement said.

Israel’s border with neighbouring Egypt runs along the Sinai . The two countries signed a peace accord in 1979.The plane crash in Egypt in which up to 224 people are feared dead is the second tragedy to strike the Russian airline involved in four years.

The Kogalymavia flight was last heard from shortly after taking off from Sharm el-Sheik for Russia this morning, before it came down in Central Sinai.

Other bodies are strapped in to their seats in the wreckage of the downed flight an Egyptian officer has reported.

But Egyptian search and rescue team members have heard voices in a section of the plane, an officer on the scene told Reuters.

“There is another section of the plane with passengers inside that the rescue team is still trying to enter and we hope to find survivors especially after hearing pained voices of people inside,” the officer said.Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered his condolences to the families of the victims of the air crash.

The comments of support have come via the Kremlin, according to Russian news agencies.

The majority of people on the doomed flight are believed to be Russian tourists.
